Five Books You’ve Gotta Read + the Mocktails to Match
5 Books To Read For Mystery, to Chortle & Gleen
Gather 'round for a literary extravaganza to end the month of Dry January! Five books to read that’ll warm your heart, expand your mind, and bring out your British chortle.
You’re thinking 💭
What kind of books are these? Mystery, rom-com, historical fiction, thought-provoking – and also thinking…"British Chortle”?
The five books for each of those genre’s::
1/ The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave
Hannah gets one last note from her husband Owen and from there she has to unravel his mysterious disappearance in an emotionally gripping story, while protecting Bailey, her teenage step-daughter from a danger she {nor Bailey} never knew surrounded them.
OOOOOH - Clapping accolades to this mystery read!
2/ The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
TJR has a talented imagination. This historical fiction-esque spans different generations and E + I wrote a review post from a 50-something perspective and her 20-something view.
3/ My {not so} Perfect Life by none-other than Sophie Kinsella
Enter the British chortle and my favorite walk through English-speak and ism’s. Kinsella sets the scene on English soil and you can’t help but adore her characters. This being my favorite of her books.
Yep, even over her infamous, Confessions of a Shopaholic novels. {Confession– I haven’t read her most popular book yet, so my favorite might change later, but the title hits a teensy bit close to reality, and why I haven’t ventured into this series yet 🙈 - Have you read it?}
My {not so} Perfect Life reminds us readers how fallible and confusing social media life is compared to REAL LIFE. Step back and take look at the clues.
4/ Menopause Manifesto by Dr. Jen Gunter
‘Gleening’ a closer look into menopause? This is your book to read. Dr. Gunter’s straight-forward wit, research, and resources in this book are never ending. And she’s not shy about calling out ANYONE. A Science-y-Snarky-read.
The best take-away from this educational book was the layout of different options. Menopause isn’t one-size fits all, and she respects that by providing different ways to tolerate our midlife cycle.
5/ The Maid by Nita Prose
An unexpected favorite in my 2022 book stack. Another mystery, but in a Amelia Bedelia meets adult literal set-up. THIS BLOG POST gives you a full {+ bit entertaining} synopsis.
BUT WAIT - THERE’S MORE!

Quick List of Books To Read
Before you go scrolling off lemme use my Galentine’s red nails to point out…
THIS PAGE - An entire years worth of book ideas on-the-quick.
I started my GG Book Shelf when traveling by plane and car so much last year. Also when it was frigid, icy, snowy winter here and I wanted to sit by my fire, drink wine and read {sometimes listen} a book.
And, reading {or listening} GOOD books is calming.
Not yoga or meditation calming, but sitting, glass of Cabernet in hand, devouring words on the page, getting lost from reality for a night, calming.
Unless you’re in Dry January, like myself, then you add these to your wine glass instead…
Two Mocktails To Try in Dry January
Have you been doing the Dry January Challenge {or dry-ish}?
I’m excited to get back to my wine and book pairs, but it’s been an interesting experiment this month going dry {on a mission to get some sleep for one 😴}.
Whether it’s a mocktail, wine, or coffee, I hope you’re reading a book that makes you laugh, chuckle, guffaw and chortle;
Or a mystery that keeps you on the edge of your chaise; Possibly an educational read to sharpen the muddled menopause thoughts;
Or A Knock’em Dead series book that has you counting down the days to the book four release!
{That’s me – impatiently waiting for book four to drop in 2024.😉🤗}
The books to read are just the tip of the reading stack, THESE book posts are good too::
If you’re curious about book box subscriptions E rates six different ones
