Fountain of Youth, Magic Serum, or Go in the Backyard and Make a Mud Mask?
A Fountain of Youth
It’s comical, in a twisted kind of way, that the Fountain of Youth eulogized in those 8th-grade history books was first sought after by a man {ol’ Ponce De Leon}. Today, it’s not the men who are targeted and bombarded with media marketing for anti-aging products.
The term “anti-aging” is as flawed as the 1980’s parachute-pants craze. I’d be ecstatic to never see either of them again.
“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all…”
We all have mirrors today…bathroom, bedroom, car visor, compact…even the camera on our phone is used as a mirror!
I never really thought about how mirrors play into the Fountain of Youth sentiment until my fifties.
Brushing my teeth in the morning {in front of a mirror}: “Were those lines there yesterday?”
Washing my face at night: “Where did THAT chin hair come from?” {Because where there is one, another is hiding right behind.}😳
Some days, it does feel like going from the Rockettes of our 20’s to the Rasinettes of our 50’s – 60’s – 70’s.
The legendary Fountain of Youth long ago dripped into the skincare market, and I’ll admit it - I went swimming in the expensive showcase of miracle cream springs.
A Fountain of Skincare
In my forties, I was lathering all sorts of skincare products, from high end to Target, All-natural and organic to night creams, masks, under-eye cooling gels…
After a few break-outs, some trips to my dermatologist, and peri-menopause changes, I’ve gone back to basics.
I haven’t broken any mirrors in the house, and I cringe some days at the puffy bags under my eyes, but I’m not 25. If there are some 20-somethings reading this today {along with my fabulous 50+ friends}…
THIS is what I hope your beautiful eyes –laugh-lines n’all– STOP SKIMMING on::
1 / Aging is a blessing to the alternative {so is wisdom and experience}.
2/ Drinking your fill of water EVERY. DAY. does more for graceful aging than any $200 bottle of soothing micro-mud with effervescent pearl grains ever will.
3/ If you find results, or a lotion/serum that makes YOU FEEL GOOD - keep using it!
4/ Ignore the media/socials that drone on about aging being some type of skin-wrinkling disease that we catch.
I’ve swum back to a minimalist skincare routine
I used CeraVe back in my 30’s, but when my income allowed, I drank up all the promises of other luxury brands.
They worked, but the quotation lines between my eyebrows are stamped in forever. There’s no avoiding the natural aging that arrives each morning as I wipe the sleep from my eyes, slide my glasses up my nose, and look in the mirror…
“Yep, lines are still there.”
But here’s the catch: I didn’t notice the fancy, high-dollar stuff making a BIGGER difference than the CeraVe lotions and serums I bought before.
After a major break-out of eczema and showing my dermatologist my bag full of potions I was using at the time, she started me at the beginning.
My new routine was like the toddler days of introducing one food at a time to see if there was a reaction. Cleanser to lotion to serum to retinol.
Age and perimenopause was part of it. The other part was throwing anything and everything on my skin to slow the aging process…and all the mirror reflected was mottled, scaly lizard patches from my forehead to my chin.

Sometimes this night cream {still undecided, so why not have both?}
A minimalist fountain of potions and serums is better {for me}. My Fountain of Youth is 50+ without the “anti” attached. Facts are facts: we’re all aging, and THANK GOODNESS for that! We’re STILL HERE…and that means aging {gracefully - most days 😉}
There is a landmark park for the Fountain of Youth in St Augustine, Florida if you’re still curious about jumping in.
Or…
Embrace your own inner TOWANDA! You’ve got experience, wisdom, {and more insurance} than you did in youth and that’s a pretty great thing too.💖
