How The Dark Academia style Looks at 50
your Dark Academia Outfits for Parents weekend
In the last post, Emma wrote about the Dark Academia trend in books. Continuing that trend, I’m inspiring some Fall fashion for your parents weekend visit to campus.
Besides wearing your child’s campus sweatshirt on game day, why not surprise them with your stylish prow-ess and employ this dark academia fashion trend that’s going crazy on the internet {in our college kid’s terms, that’s “viral” on TikTok}.
I styled three Dark Academia outfits together for your Fall campus walk along the ivy covered brick buildings.
Don’t have an Oxford student in Old England? Me either.
This Dark Academia style works all Fall and Winter from work, to wine tasting, to grabbing a warm apple cider donut at the apple orchard.
{No one passes up one, or three, of those donuts. Warm apple cider donuts is the quintessential vision board of Fall in the Midwest.}
You might have a lot of these pieces in your closet already to mix-n-match. If not, I have a list of shops where you can find the rich colors for Fall.
The Color Palette
The dark academia color palette is dark, of course. Deep colors of
brown
chocolate
forest green
burgundy
black
with a contrast of cream, deep orange, blush, and beige.
Dark Academia Style
The style can be nostalgic, vintage, with an old English university vibe. The Oxford English professor of robes, brown tweed pants or brown and forest green blazer come to mind.
Fall and Winter beg for this style trend because it’s centered around WARMTH.
And layers! In our 50’s we can all respect the layers since we might be chilled one minute, and shedding the jacket and sweatshirt the next…Right?
Create your Dark Academia outfits from these pieces::
wool pants/trousers
wool blazers
turtlenecks
sweaters
sweater vests
oversized sweaters
trench coat
pleated trousers
chelsea boots
chunky loafers
The only trouble I’m having with the dark academia fashion trend is the lack of denim. I wear jeans allllmost everyday and twice on Friday {after catching that french-fry-ketchup-drip on my knee}.
I’ve added in a pair of jeans {+ another}. It’s just not practical otherwise.
Parents weekend = jeans, whether in a Dark Academia aesthetic or not.
Each of these three outfit ideas for over 50 Mama’s are perfect all Fall long, when you go to parents weekend, the apple orchard, or out to dinner.
Your college student is going to be awestruck when they see your trendy academia style!
Dark Academia Outfits
OUTFIT 1 \ Friday entrance after work. Heading up to campus for dinner
Hat | Camel Blazer | Beige Shirt | Brown Vest | Brown Wool Pants
OUTFIT 2 \ The Saturday outfit is for meandering around town or out to dinner {If your Babé’s school has football, switch the plain sweatshirt for their campus merch under the jacket.
You never go wrong with layers in this phase of life😉 {There’s a tank under this sweatshirt just in case}
Blush Tank | Sweatshirt | Houndstooth Jacket | Forest Green Jeans | Booties
OUTFIT 3 \ And Sunday brunch before they kick us off campus. Add in a camel or brown colored trench coat for a cooler day.
Button-up Shirt | Houndstooth Vest | Dark Denim | Chelsea Boots
{For these jeans I ordered one size up for a baggie fit}
Find Dark Academia Pieces On Any Budget
The options are endless here and always a good buy for pieces that you’ll wear for years. The blazer in Outfit 2 is from Nordstrom 20 years ago {yes, I gasped a little myself typing that number. When I say “forever pieces” I’m serious. 😉}
The trench coat, tweed jacket, blazer and swing jacket will all fit into our 50+ Mom dark academia style. The Graylin Swing Jacket has been calling my number –I’m about to answer–
Always and forever a true classic in the chocolates, browns, beige, and darker aesthetics. Their Fall style fits into the dark academia aesthetic in the wool skirts, trench coats, and sweater looks.
A good place for the oversized sweaters, blazers and shackets.
Good pieces to find here in the mid to upper price point. Also carried at Nordstrom.
Their lineup of Fall pant styles is the place to buy and will last long after the dark academia craze passes.
Trench coats, button-up shirts, blazers, trousers
Another good basics and budget friendly shop
We don’t wear the 20-something dark academia style trends, we style our own 50-something fashion and be the trend-setter for their, “what’s to come” style years.
The dark academia style isn’t you? How about a good ol’ white shirt then::
Are you going to pack one of these to wear for parents weekend this year?
