10 Books That Fit A Dark Academia Aesthetic

The last college and high school bells ring in that “class in session” and with that Emma is sharing her academic expertise on this dark academia aesthetic trend. There’s a been a big fuss in this look, both in the book and fashion worlds.

And we do flock to a good fuss over trends.

Emma, my college girl resident book expert, gave me the book side of dark academia. She said it’s something that’s been growing in popularity over the years especially by the young adult generation.

This doesn’t mean that it’s not for all ages, however - anyone can appreciate a good aesthetic!

“Dark academia” is defined specifically as “a social media aesthetic and subculture concerned with higher education, writing/poetry, the arts, and classic Greek and Gothic architecture” {Wikipedia}.

Following is a list of book recommendations that fit into the Dark Academia book aesthetics. I’m styling your Fall outfit inspiration in the next post to match up the books with your wardrobe in Dark Academia for Fall.

The dark academia Book genre is larger than the aesthetic’s definition -

Many books labelled as such aren’t actually “dark academia”, though many do take place in or near a school with nefarious or thrilling events occurring, as the recommendations list will show.

There are many themes a dark academia novel could explore, with the most prominent ones being death or the pursuit of knowledge (specifically of the scholarly kind, though this may also lead to personal or societal revelations for the characters).

If you’ve read any dark academia books before, I’m willing to bet you’ve noticed at least 75% of them also include a murder mystery/mysterious disappearances plot.

Now that we’ve got a handle on what dark academia could mean, let’s get to the fun part - the books!!

1/ Ace of Spades - Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

3/ A Love Story - Dana Schwartz

6/ The Grimrose Girls - Laura Pohl
